Although major battery manufacturers are currently headquartered in countries like China, Japan, or South Korea, the market is gradually expanding to new horizons, particularly for lithium-producing countries.

Given the rapid global increase in demand for metals for the production of industrial batteries in recent years, Mexico could have a promising future if it manages to establish lithium industrial battery production chains, which would have a positive impact on crucial areas such as energy storage.

Lithium Battery Production in Mexico

Mexico is projected to have highly productive lithium deposits within its territory in approximately a decade, potentially becoming one of the top 10 countries with the largest reserves globally.

According to estimates by the Mexican Geological Service (SGM), lithium deposits are primarily located in 18 states across the country: Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Zacatecas. The states of Jalisco, Puebla, and Sonora have the most advanced exploration mines.

However, the significant benefits of national lithium extraction and the future of industrial battery production in Mexico with this metal are yet to be seen. This is due to a recent reform to the Mining Law, which stipulates that lithium can only be extracted and commercialized by the Mexican government, effectively closing the door to private and foreign investment in the market.

Increased Durability and Power

The wide range of industrial batteries available today is characterized by their enhanced durability and power, along with low maintenance requirements, making them a significant advantage.

The use of industrial batteries in Mexico and around the world is intended for various sectors such as energy storage, telecommunications, power substations (including solar and wind energy), emergency lighting, electric vehicle manufacturing, and more.

Moreover, lithium industrial batteries not only provide solutions for energy storage but also serve as a great alternative for sustainable development. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world could achieve its sustainable energy goals by 2040, with batteries and storage sources expected to play a crucial role in meeting this target, given their increasing capacity and lifespan.
